If I received a dollar for every time someone said to me, “I want to lose weight from my stomach!” I would be a millionaire. It’s a common question that is asked on a daily basis.
We all want that “six pack” – and no, I’m not talking about the XXXX Gold or Corona variety! We see it everywhere – on the front of magazines, on those infomercials on morning TV – men and women with abdominal muscles that we want and just can’t seem to get.
So therein lies the question, can we spot reduce?
In the instance of the stomach, our abdominal wall consists of major muscle groups that help us flex and hold us upright. There are no upper or lower abs. So we can’t just target the lower abs, which is the common area of fat build up.
So are you ready for it:
You will never get a flat stomach just by performing abdominal exercises. Sit ups will definitely strengthen your abdominal muscles, but sit ups alone will not will not rid that layer of fat covering those hidden abdominal muscles!
Fat is lost from the entire body as a result of regular exercise and diet, not from different body parts. To lose fat anywhere on your body you need to burn calories. We all know how to do this – follow a program that involves both cardio and strength training, and a healthy eating plan. By decreasing the fat stores and increasing your lean muscle, we can get closer to that six pack!
Spot reduction is a myth that if you work a specific muscle group you will decrease the amount of fat in that area. So lads, put down your XXXX, ladies put down your Coronas, so you can take the first step to a six pack!
